Roth 401(k) rollover: can it go to a Roth gold IRA?

Yes, an eligible Roth 401(k) distribution can roll into an accepting self-directed Roth IRA that holds qualifying gold. Use a Roth destination and check the receiving Roth IRA’s five-year withdrawal rule separately. [1] [2]

The short answer

Yes—an eligible designated Roth 401(k) distribution can roll into a self-directed Roth IRA that accepts qualifying metal and the rollover. A designated Roth employer-plan account can roll into a Roth IRA, not a traditional IRA. Moving untaxed plan money to a Roth IRA generally brings the untaxed amount into income. [1]

Confirm the Roth IRA’s withdrawal timing separately; years in the Roth 401(k) do not automatically satisfy the receiving IRA’s five-year test.

Where can a Roth 401(k) rollover go?

An eligible designated Roth 401(k) distribution can move to a Roth IRA through a direct rollover or within 60 days of receipt. Rolling the full eligible amount into a Roth IRA keeps that rollover out of current income; leaving earnings out can change the tax result. [2]

A Roth self-directed IRA is the receiving tax wrapper; holding eligible gold is its investment choice. Ask the custodian whether it accepts the designated Roth plan money before filling in the distribution form. A “gold IRA” label alone does not identify the tax category.

How do you split pre-tax and Roth 401(k) money?

Give each tax source explicit destination instructions rather than treating the whole statement balance as Roth. [1]

A designated Roth employer-plan account can roll into a Roth IRA, not a traditional IRA. Moving untaxed plan money to a Roth IRA generally brings the untaxed amount into income. [1] Use the general 401(k) rollover guide for employment status and pre-tax plan checks. Have the administrator identify any employer contribution’s tax character rather than guessing from the contribution’s name.

Does the Roth 401(k) five-year period carry over to a Roth IRA?

Time in a designated Roth 401(k) does not count toward the Roth IRA five-taxable-year period for qualified distributions. If you contributed to any Roth IRA in an earlier year, that earlier IRA contribution is used to measure the period. [2]

You already contributed to a Roth IRA

Locate the first contribution tax year and confirm how that earlier IRA history applies.

This is your first Roth IRA

Do not count years in the Roth 401(k) as Roth IRA years. Ask the receiving custodian to explain the new IRA record.

You intend to withdraw after the move

Have a tax professional check qualified-distribution, ordering and any conversion rules for the amount you intend to take.

For Roth IRA earnings to come out as a qualified distribution, the five-year period must be met along with a qualifying condition, such as reaching age 59½. Separate conversion timing rules can matter when pre-tax money is converted; a rollover is not permission for an immediate tax-free cash withdrawal. [3] The IRS designated Roth account FAQ directly addresses the plan-to-IRA five-year distinction.

How much tax will you pay on a Roth 401(k) to Roth IRA rollover?

An eligible full designated Roth rollover into a Roth IRA is kept out of current income; a pre-tax-to-Roth rollover generally brings the untaxed amount into income. The tax source and amount actually rolled over decide the result. [2]

The IRS Form 1099-R instructions generally use code G for a direct employer-plan rollover and code H for a direct rollover from a designated Roth account to a Roth IRA. A pre-tax-to-Roth rollover can have a taxable amount even with a direct payment. [9] Compare the rollover tax forms and receiving-account records. An eligible rollover is separate from a new annual IRA contribution. The annual contribution ceiling does not cap an otherwise eligible rollover. [6]

Can you roll over a Roth 401(k) while still employed?

Only if the plan permits an available distribution that is eligible for rollover; having a Roth balance does not itself unlock an in-service payment. [4]

Leaving the employer can be a distribution event. While still employed, reaching age 59½ can permit a distribution if the plan allows it. The plan document determines the available options; age alone is not a promise of access. [4]

Use the IRS 401(k) distribution overview alongside the actual plan document. Ask the administrator about your source and situation.

How do you arrange a Roth gold IRA rollover?

Arrange an eligible direct rollover to the accepting Roth IRA, then make a separate decision about the metal order. [5]

Ask the employer plan to pay the receiving IRA directly. The mandatory withholding for a payment to you does not apply to this direct route. [5]

  1. Record each source

Separate designated Roth, pre-tax and any other after-tax money.

  2. Open the receiving Roth IRA

Check custody, accepted metal, costs and the Roth IRA’s contribution history.

  3. Confirm direct payment details

Match the plan’s distribution instruction to the Roth IRA custodian’s exact payee information.

  4. Reconcile the records

Confirm funds arrived and retain the plan’s basis records and tax forms before authorizing a purchase.

Keep each handoff documented before starting the next one.

If a distribution has already been paid to you, read the Check the 60-day deadline and relief and contact the receiving custodian about eligibility and the deadline.

When might keeping the Roth 401(k) be better?

Keeping it may be better when its investments, charges or withdrawal arrangements fit your needs and the proposed metal purchase adds costs you do not want.

Compare the plan you have with the actual written IRA terms. If you are moving an existing Roth IRA rather than an employer plan, use the gold IRA transfer guide.

What else should you check?

Check the account-specific rule and the conditions in each answer before approving a payment.

Is it a good idea to roll a 401(k) into a Roth IRA?

It depends on the tax source, the cost of any conversion and the accounts’ features. A designated Roth rollover and conversion of pre-tax money are different decisions. Keeping your current plan remains an option.

Does a Roth 401(k) rollover count as an annual IRA contribution?

An eligible rollover is separate from a new annual IRA contribution. The annual contribution ceiling does not cap an otherwise eligible rollover. [6]

Can you roll a Roth 401(k) into a traditional gold IRA?

A designated Roth employer-plan account can roll into a Roth IRA, not a traditional IRA. Moving untaxed plan money to a Roth IRA generally brings the untaxed amount into income. [1] Confirm that the receiving account application says Roth if you are moving designated Roth money.

Is there a downside to moving Roth 401(k) money to a gold IRA?

Yes: charges, metal pricing and withdrawal timing all need review. Time in a Roth 401(k) does not count toward the Roth IRA five-taxable-year period. [2] Compare costs and access before signing.
