A gold IRA transfer moves existing IRA money to a compatible self-directed IRA before a separate eligible metal purchase. For an existing IRA, request payment from the old trustee to the new trustee. A trustee-to-trustee transfer avoids withholding and is outside the IRA rollover frequency limit. [1]
Confirm the old IRA’s tax type and the new custodian’s acceptance before asking the current provider to release anything.

How do you transfer an IRA to gold?
A trustee transfer moves IRA money between the institutions without making you the payee. It is a different transaction from receiving an IRA distribution and rolling it back into an account. [2]
A routine traditional-IRA trustee transfer is tax-free because there is no distribution to you. A check payable to the new trustee can still be handed to you for deposit without turning it into a personal distribution. [2] The IRS IRA transfer guidance distinguishes these transactions. If a representative uses “rollover” loosely, ask them to identify the form of payment and whether the transaction will be recorded as a trustee transfer.
What instructions do the two IRA providers need?
They need the receiving account identity, matching tax treatment, the amount to move and a clear instruction for institution-to-institution payment.
- Name the current IRA
Locate the latest statement and check whether it is traditional, Roth, SEP or SIMPLE.
- Get receiving-account approval
Ask whether the new custodian accepts the IRA type and the requested payment method.
- Specify assets or cash
Ask both institutions how the existing holdings will be handled and what a sale or transfer costs.
- Confirm completion
Match the old provider’s debit with the new IRA’s receipt before authorizing metal.
Do not assume that a brokerage’s mutual funds or securities can simply arrive as physical metal. Ask whether existing investments must be sold and where cash will sit during the move. Separate those operational answers from the decision to place a purchase order.
How do traditional, Roth and SEP balances differ?
Match the destination to the existing tax character unless you deliberately choose a conversion with its tax consequences. [3] [2]
Traditional SEP IRA money follows the traditional IRA rollover framework. Identify whether any SEP or SIMPLE balance is Roth before choosing the destination. [2]

| Existing IRA | Destination to confirm |
|---|---|
| Traditional or traditional SEP | A traditional self-directed IRA for a same-tax-type transfer. |
| Roth | An accepting self-directed Roth IRA. |
| SIMPLE | Check the two-year participation restriction and permitted destination before authorizing payment. |
The rollover vs transfer comparison explains why a trustee transfer is distinct; a tax professional should address basis or a conversion. An existing Roth IRA can move to another Roth IRA; the IRS rollover chart does not permit a Roth IRA rollover to a traditional IRA. [3]
What must a SIMPLE IRA owner check first?
A SIMPLE IRA has a two-year participation restriction before money can move to a non-SIMPLE IRA. Have the current trustee verify the start date and the receiving account type before authorizing a transfer. [2]
Do not use “it is just another IRA” as the reason to skip this check. A provider’s willingness to open an account is not confirmation that money can leave a SIMPLE IRA for that account today.
Does the annual IRA limit restrict the transfer?
An eligible rollover is separate from a new annual IRA contribution. The annual contribution ceiling does not cap an otherwise eligible rollover. [2]
For 2026, the regular IRA contribution limit is $7,500, with an additional $1,100 catch-up for people 50 or older. These new-contribution limits are separate from eligible rollovers. [4]
RMDs, employer-plan hardship payments and certain other distributions cannot be rolled over. Ask the payer to confirm which part of your proposed payment is eligible before it leaves the plan. [5] If an RMD is due, ask the current provider how it will be handled separately.
What should you compare before replacing the IRA?
Compare the present IRA’s cost and flexibility with the new account and the proposed metal trade. A broader self-directed menu does not mean a cheaper or more suitable account.
Gold held in an IRA must fit the statutory coins or bullion exception. Qualifying bullion must be in the physical possession of an eligible trustee. Confirm the custodian's accepted metal and storage arrangements before purchase. [6]
Gold can fall in price and pays no income. Dealer pricing, custody and storage add costs; FINRA says self-directed IRA fees are typically higher than directed-IRA fees. A rollover is not right for everyone. [7] Use the fee and timing questions to ask about transfer-out charges, account closure and receiving fees.
What else should you check?
Check the account-specific rule and the conditions in each answer before approving a payment.
Can you convert your IRA into gold?
You can transfer an existing IRA to a compatible self-directed IRA and separately authorize a purchase of qualifying metal. [1] The metal and custody arrangements must meet the statutory exception; changing investments is separate from converting pre-tax money to Roth. [6]
Is a trustee-to-trustee IRA transfer taxable?
A routine traditional-IRA trustee transfer is tax-free because there is no distribution to you. A check payable to the new trustee can still be handed to you for deposit without turning it into a personal distribution. [2] Check the SIMPLE restrictions and any change in tax category before proceeding.
Does a gold IRA transfer count toward the one-per-year rule?
The usual limit is one IRA-to-IRA 60-day rollover across your IRAs in any 12-month period. Trustee transfers and plan-to-IRA rollovers do not use that allowance. [1] If the payment is made to you instead, check the 60-day rollover rule and 12-month test.
What are the downsides of a gold IRA?
Gold can fall in price, pays no income and adds dealer, custody and storage costs. [7] Compare exit costs, income needs and access with the IRA you already hold.
