When is my 60-day rollover deadline?

Add 60 calendar days to your receipt date; the next day is day 1. [1]

Count after receipt. A correctly executed direct rollover or trustee transfer skips this clock.
The short answer

Use your receipt date for the deadline. Use the gross pre-tax employer-plan distribution for withholding; these are separate calculations, and neither confirms that a distribution qualifies for rollover treatment.

What else matters for my 60-day deadline?

Your ordinary deadline is the 60th calendar day after receipt: receipt is day 0 and the next day is day 1, so June 30, 2025 gives August 29, 2025. This calculator assumes no weekend or holiday extension; finish earlier if the date falls on a weekend (IRS Publication 590-A (checked November 7, 2026)).

Direct rollovers and trustee-to-trustee transfers are not 60-day rollovers. The guide to counting days and checking the IRA frequency limit covers the separate eligibility tests.

If the deadline has passed, read the missed-deadline relief checks and the IRS waiver FAQ (checked November 7, 2026).

How much does 20% rollover withholding leave me to deposit?

A taxable eligible employer-plan distribution paid to you generally has mandatory 20% withholding. Replacing that withheld amount from other funds lets you roll over the full gross amount. [3] This indirect rollover calculator assumes the entire eligible payment is taxable pre-tax employer-plan money going to a compatible pre-tax receiving account (IRS Topic 413 (checked November 7, 2026)).

Before withholding. Fully taxable pre-tax employer-plan money only; enter dollars and cents without commas.
Leave blank to roll the full gross. Include any replacement funds in the deposit amount.
Enter your amounts to calculate withholding and any amount left out of the rollover.

The 10% additional tax on early distributions may apply to the taxable amount not rolled over, unless an exception applies. [2] IRS rollover guidance (checked November 7, 2026). The tool reports taxable income, not the tax owed; withholding is a tax payment, not a determination of your final tax bill.

IRA distributions are not subject to the mandatory 20% employer-plan withholding rule; withholding can still apply, and you can elect out or choose a different amount. [2] See the IRS distinction between IRA and plan withholding (checked November 7, 2026); use this withholding calculation only for the employer-plan scenario above.

What do the IRS deadline and withholding examples show?

The IRS examples below show the date-counting rule and the cash shortfall created by withholding. The amounts and deadline are calculated by the same functions as the forms; they remain available without JavaScript. [1] [2]

Jordan’s eligible 401(k) gross: $10,000.00Generally withheld: $2,000.00; cash received: $8,000.00
Full rollover deposit: $10,000.00Other funds needed: $2,000.00; taxable amount not rolled: $0.00
Deposit only the cash received: $8,000.00Taxable income not rolled: $2,000.00; withholding remains taxes paid, not an extra rollover deposit.
For the fully pre-tax plan example, taxable income not rolled = gross − deposit. The additional tax on early distributions may apply unless an exception applies; no tax or penalty dollar amount is estimated.

Withholding is part of the gross distribution. The IRS’s Jordan example assumes an eligible, fully pre-tax plan payment; checked November 7, 2026.

Jordan needs $2,000.00 from other funds to deposit the entire $10,000.00. Compare the IRS Jordan example (checked November 7, 2026) and the IRS June 30 receipt example (checked November 7, 2026).

Which payment route avoids the deadline and withholding?

For eligible employer-plan money, request a direct rollover; for an IRA move, ask for a trustee-to-trustee transfer. A correctly executed institution-to-institution payment avoids both the personal 60-day redeposit clock and the mandatory 20% plan withholding. IRS payment-route definitions (checked November 7, 2026).

Trustee transfers and plan-to-IRA rollovers are excluded from the IRA one-per-12-months restriction. Compare who should be named as payee and the paperwork for moving an IRA between trustees; use the deadline and frequency guide if money was already paid to you. [2]

What should I confirm before relying on the results?

Confirm the actual receipt date, eligible amount and receiving-account instructions with the plan administrator, custodian or a tax professional. Results are informational, not tax advice; this tool does not determine rollover eligibility, relief, Roth-conversion tax or exceptions to additional tax.

The deadline adds 60 calendar days using date-only arithmetic; days remaining compare it with your device’s current calendar date. Dollar calculations use integer cents, round withholding once to the nearest cent, and default a blank deposit to the full gross; entering zero means no deposit.

What else should you check?

Check the account-specific rule and the conditions in each answer before approving a payment.

Does this calculator extend a weekend deadline?

No. It displays the 60th calendar day and flags Saturdays and Sundays so you can complete the rollover earlier; it assumes no weekend or holiday extension. Confirm timing with the receiving institution.

Can I use the withholding calculation for an IRA distribution?

No. It models a fully taxable eligible employer-plan payment to you; IRA withholding follows different rules, and can still apply. [2]

Is the amount withheld the same as the tax I owe?

No. Withholding is a payment toward tax, and your final tax depends on your circumstances. This calculator estimates neither income tax owed nor additional-tax dollars.

Does a result mean I am allowed to make another IRA rollover?

No. The IRA-to-IRA 12-month restriction is separate from the 60-day deadline and is generally applied across all your IRAs. Check prior distributions and the IRA frequency conditions before withdrawing money. [1] [2]
