There is no universal rollover fee or completion time in this guide. Request an itemized exit-and-opening quote: transfer-out or close-out, wire or check handling, any contract-release cost and receiving-account setup. Processing varies with the account, documents and institutions involved.

Which fees belong in a gold IRA rollover budget?
Budget the charges triggered by leaving, sending and opening, and ask who collects each one. These are account-specific questions; this guide does not assume every charge applies.
Ask the old IRA provider whether a full or partial trustee transfer has a charge, and whether it differs by asset or payment method.
Ask whether emptying the account triggers a separate closing fee or a charge already included in transfer-out. Avoid counting the same quoted item twice.
Ask the sender and receiver whether the chosen payment method adds a wire, check-handling or delivery charge.
Ask the current provider about any liquidation, surrender or other release adjustment that applies to your actual account.
Ask the new custodian or partner about the account-opening charge and whether another party bills separately.
Keep the current provider’s written release estimate beside the receiving IRA’s opening terms. A dealer’s “no rollover fee” statement may describe only the service it controls.
What receiving-account setup charges are published?
The checked partner records publish opening charges; the table below reads those fields directly and keeps their source dates. They do not price a complete rollover.

Annual administration, storage and metal pricing affect the later holding decision. See the company comparison’s first-year and ongoing account subtotals for the published schedules. Request the full purchase price and a same-day repurchase quote for the exact metal. The gap is a cost of entering and leaving the position; a low account fee does not remove it. [2]
How long does a gold IRA rollover take?
It varies by plan, custodian, contract and the completeness of the instructions; there is no sourced universal duration here. Ask for an estimate at each handoff.

Varies; ask your plan. - Stage 2Open the receiving IRA

Before release, ask the old provider when it considers an instruction complete and whether signatures or approvals are missing. After release, ask for a payment reference and confirm receipt with the new custodian. The later metal order and storage confirmation are separate steps.
What should you do if the rollover is delayed?
Locate the last confirmed handoff and ask that institution for a trace or correction. A payment marked “released” is not yet proof that the receiving IRA credited it.
Ask the employer plan to pay the receiving IRA directly. The mandatory withholding for a payment to you does not apply to this direct route. [1] If money was paid to you instead, an operational delay is not automatically a tax extension. If the distribution is paid to you, the usual deadline to complete an eligible rollover is 60 days after receipt. A direct payment to the receiving account avoids handling this deadline yourself. [1] The IRS rollover topic explains payment and deadline rules. Read the missed-deadline relief rules if needed.
When can rollover costs make staying put the better choice?
Staying can be better when exit and opening costs outweigh your reason to move or when the proposed account does not meet your needs. Compare both the cost of changing accounts and the costs that follow.
Gold can fall in price and pays no income. Dealer pricing, custody and storage add costs; FINRA says self-directed IRA fees are typically higher than directed-IRA fees. A rollover is not right for everyone. [2] Use the rollover checklist to retain the actual quote and the company comparison to ask about the receiving arrangements.
What else should you check?
Check the account-specific rule and the conditions in each answer before approving a payment.
Does “no rollover fee” mean the move has no cost?
No. Ask which service or charge the statement covers. Old-account release, transfer-out, closure, wires, receiving setup and the later investment costs can be separate.
How long does each stage take?
Ask the institution responsible for each stage. Eligibility approval, opening and payment release have different owners; this guide does not assign invented durations.
What are the downsides of a gold IRA rollover?
Gold can fall in price, pays no income and adds dealer, custody and storage costs. [2] The move may also create exit charges or give up plan features; compare your current account’s terms before submitting instructions.
