403(b) rollover: can it go to a gold IRA?

Yes, an eligible 403(b) distribution can roll into a compatible self-directed gold IRA. Ask your plan administrator which funds can leave and confirm the contract-release terms with the provider before requesting direct payment. [1] [2]

The short answer

Yes—an eligible 403(b) distribution can roll into a compatible traditional IRA, including a self-directed IRA holding qualifying gold. Distribution permission and the contract’s release terms must both be checked. A 403(b) plan may permit distributions after severance from employment or at age 59½. An available withdrawal must still be eligible for rollover; a hardship payment is not eligible. [1]

Ask the administrator which distribution is available, then ask the contract provider what it costs to release that money. Confirm the receiving IRA before submitting either instruction.

What happens to a 403(b) after leaving a job?

Leaving a job can permit a distribution under the plan, but it does not mean you must roll over the account. The IRS 403(b) FAQ lists possible distribution events; your administrator must confirm which the plan permits. [1]

A school or hospital name on your statement does not tell you every account term. Locate the plan’s current summary and your provider’s contract. Ask whether the balance is in an annuity contract, a custodial account or another permitted arrangement, and identify the person who approves the release.

How should you coordinate the administrator and provider?

Get approval and cost information from the current plan before asking the new IRA custodian for payment instructions.

  1. Identify the plan and contract

Collect the latest statement, plan summary and any annuity or account contract.

  2. Confirm eligibility and release costs

Ask which amount can be paid and request a written net-release estimate.

  3. Open the compatible receiving IRA

Check the tax character and the custodian’s acceptance of the distribution.

  4. Request the direct rollover

Match payee details across the plan and provider instructions.

  5. Verify cash arrival

Check the receiving statement before approving a separate metal purchase.

Keep each handoff documented before starting the next one.

Ask the employer plan to pay the receiving IRA directly. The mandatory withholding for a payment to you does not apply to this direct route. [2] Keep a record of which office has the next action. If two providers hold separate contracts, ask about each contract rather than assuming one release instruction covers all of them.

Which tax sources and payments need separate treatment?

Separate designated Roth money, pre-tax money and any payment that cannot be rolled over. The source labels matter more than the marketing name of the new account. [3] [2]

A designated Roth employer-plan account can roll into a Roth IRA, not a traditional IRA. Moving untaxed plan money to a Roth IRA generally brings the untaxed amount into income. [3]

Eligible pre-tax distributionAsk for a direct rollover to a compatible traditional IRA to preserve tax deferral.
Designated Roth distributionUse a compatible Roth destination.
Hardship payment or RMDDo not include it in an eligible rollover instruction.
RMDs, employer-plan hardship payments and certain other distributions cannot be rolled over. Ask the payer to confirm which part of your proposed payment is eligible before it leaves the plan. [2]

A taxable eligible rollover distribution from an employer plan paid to you generally has 20% withheld. To roll over the entire taxable distribution, replace that withheld amount using other money within the rollover deadline. [2] The direct and indirect payment comparison shows why receiving the money personally creates extra work.

What should the old provider put in writing?

Ask for the amount that will actually be released and every condition that changes that amount. Account charges at the new custodian do not answer a contract-exit question.

These are questions to ask, not a claim that your contract contains each charge. Put the written answers beside the new IRA’s account and dealer costs before deciding.

When might retaining the 403(b) be better?

Retaining it may be better if the current contract or investments serve a need that the proposed gold account does not. Compare withdrawal choices and any benefits you would surrender as well as annual fees.

Gold can fall in price and pays no income. Dealer pricing, custody and storage add costs; FINRA says self-directed IRA fees are typically higher than directed-IRA fees. A rollover is not right for everyone. [4] A rollover should follow a comparison of the retirement plan you have and the account you would buy—not only a comparison between metal dealers.

What else should you check?

Check the account-specific rule and the conditions in each answer before approving a payment.

Can I roll a 403(b) into a traditional IRA?

Yes, an eligible pre-tax distribution can roll into an accepting traditional IRA. [1] Direct payment avoids the mandatory withholding on an eligible taxable plan payment to you. [2] Check release conditions with both the plan and provider.

How do you avoid paying current tax on a 403(b) rollover?

Confirm an eligible distribution and compatible tax destination, then request direct payment to the IRA. [2] Moving pre-tax money to Roth can create current income; designated Roth money needs a Roth-compatible destination. [3]

Can I roll my 403(b) into a Roth IRA?

A designated Roth employer-plan account can roll into a Roth IRA, not a traditional IRA. Moving untaxed plan money to a Roth IRA generally brings the untaxed amount into income. [3] Ask a tax professional about the tax effect if your source is pre-tax rather than designated Roth.

Will an annuity surrender charge apply?

Ask the contract provider for the release calculation and the relevant contract clause. This guide does not assume every 403(b) is an annuity or that every contract has a surrender charge.
