A direct rollover sends eligible employer-plan money to the receiving plan or IRA; an indirect rollover pays you and requires an eligible redeposit within the ordinary 60-day window. Ask the employer plan to pay the receiving IRA directly. The mandatory withholding for a payment to you does not apply to this direct route. [1]
For money already in an IRA, ask about a trustee-to-trustee transfer. It has its own terminology and reporting treatment.

What is a direct rollover?
A direct rollover is an eligible employer-plan distribution paid to another retirement plan or an IRA, rather than to you personally. [2]
A direct-rollover check can be delivered to you if it is payable to the receiving IRA. The payee, rather than the delivery address, determines whether this withholding rule applies. [2]
For example, a check payable to the receiving custodian for your IRA can still travel through your mailbox. Confirm the exact wording with both institutions. The IRS payment-route definitions distinguish the payee from delivery.
How does a direct rollover compare with an indirect rollover?
The direct route gives the receiving institution the payment; the indirect route makes you responsible for an eligible redeposit and any withholding replacement. [1]

| Question | Direct employer-plan rollover | Indirect rollover |
|---|---|---|
| Who is paid? | The receiving plan or IRA. | You personally. |
| Who handles redeposit? | Institutions follow the direct-payment instructions. | You arrange the eligible deposit. |
| Ordinary 60-day window? | No personal redeposit deadline for a correctly executed direct payment. | Yes, counted after receipt. |
| Mandatory plan withholding? | Not on the direct-rollover amount. | Generally 20% of the taxable eligible plan distribution. |
| IRA one-per-12-months rule? | A plan-to-IRA rollover does not use it. | Applies to IRA-to-IRA 60-day rollovers; not plan-to-IRA rollovers. |
If the distribution is paid to you, the usual deadline to complete an eligible rollover is 60 days after receipt. A direct payment to the receiving account avoids handling this deadline yourself. [1] A taxable eligible rollover distribution from an employer plan paid to you generally has 20% withheld. To roll over the entire taxable distribution, replace that withheld amount using other money within the rollover deadline. [1] The 60-day rollover rule guide owns day counting, frequency limits and late-rollover relief.
What does an indirect rollover look like with withholding?
A taxable plan payment to you can leave less cash in hand than the gross amount that needs to reach the IRA for a full rollover. [1]
Illustrative example · Arithmetic only
A $50,000 eligible, fully pre-tax plan distribution paid to you
- Gross distribution
- $50,000
- 20% withheld
- − $10,000
- Cash you receive
- $40,000
To roll over the full $50,000: deposit the $40,000 received plus $10,000 from other funds within the rollover window.
If only $40,000 is rolled over, the remaining $10,000 is generally taxable and may face an additional early-distribution tax. The withholding is credited toward tax; it is not a dealer fee or your final tax bill.
Before choosing this route, check whether you can supply the withheld amount from other funds and whether the distribution is eligible. RMDs, employer-plan hardship payments and certain other distributions cannot be rolled over. Ask the payer to confirm which part of your proposed payment is eligible before it leaves the plan. [1]
Do you report a direct rollover on your taxes?
A rollover distribution still needs to be reported on your tax return even when none of it is taxable. Retain the distribution form and the receiving account records so the amount rolled over can be reconciled. [4]
The IRS Form 1099-R instructions generally use code G for a direct employer-plan rollover and code H for a direct rollover from a designated Roth account to a Roth IRA. A pre-tax-to-Roth rollover can have a taxable amount even with a direct payment. [3]

| Record or transaction | What to look for |
|---|---|
| Form 1099-R: ordinary direct plan rollover | Generally code G; check the taxable amount, especially if the destination is Roth. |
| Form 1099-R: designated Roth plan → Roth IRA | Code H for that direct rollover. |
| Indirect rollover | Keep the payer’s distribution record and proof of the amount and date redeposited. Do not assume the payer knows you later completed a rollover. |
| Form 5498 | The receiving IRA reports ordinary rollover contributions in box 2. |
| Routine same-tax-type IRA trustee transfer | Generally no 1099-R distribution or 5498 rollover-contribution entry. Conversions are different. |
The receiving IRA reports rollover contributions in Form 5498, box 2. A routine same-tax-type trustee-to-trustee IRA transfer is generally not reported as a distribution on Form 1099-R or as a rollover contribution in that box. Roth conversions have separate reporting rules. [3] Read the IRS instructions for Forms 1099-R and 5498. Ask the issuer about a form that does not match what actually happened; a code alone does not establish a tax-free result.
How long does a direct rollover take?
It varies with the releasing plan, the receiving institution and whether the instructions are complete. This guide has no sourced universal processing duration.
- Confirm the available distribution
Ask the plan which funds are eligible and whether an approval is outstanding.
- Check the receiving account
Match the tax category, account number and custodian payee instructions.
- Track release and receipt
Obtain a payment reference, then confirm the credit with the receiving institution.
Use the rollover stages and tracking questions to locate a delay. An operational estimate is separate from the tax clock on money paid to you.
Which route should you request for a gold IRA?
For an eligible employer-plan distribution, requesting a direct rollover usually avoids unnecessary withholding replacement and personal redeposit work. For an existing IRA, request a trustee transfer instead. [1]
Start with 401(k) distribution eligibility or IRA rollover vs trustee-to-trustee transfer. The IRA one-per-12-months limit excludes trustee-to-trustee transfers, traditional-to-Roth IRA conversions, plan-to-IRA, IRA-to-plan and plan-to-plan rollovers. It is not a once-per-calendar-year allowance. [2]
What else should you check?
Check the account-specific rule and the conditions in each answer before approving a payment.
What qualifies as a direct rollover?
The plan pays the receiving eligible account rather than you. A direct-rollover check can be delivered to you if it is payable to the receiving IRA. The payee, rather than the delivery address, determines whether this withholding rule applies. [2]
How many direct rollovers can you do per year?
The IRA one-per-12-months limit excludes trustee-to-trustee transfers, traditional-to-Roth IRA conversions, plan-to-IRA, IRA-to-plan and plan-to-plan rollovers. It is not a once-per-calendar-year allowance. [2] Each payment must still be eligible and accepted by the receiving account.
Can you use a 60-day rollover for an inherited IRA?
A nonspouse beneficiary cannot use an ordinary 60-day rollover of an inherited IRA distribution. A permitted trustee-to-trustee transfer must preserve inherited-IRA status; spouse beneficiaries have different options. [5] Get beneficiary-specific advice before withdrawing money.
