401(k) gold IRA rollover: check eligibility, then the steps

An eligible 401(k) distribution can roll into an accepting gold IRA. Confirm the plan’s release conditions first, then request direct payment to a compatible IRA to avoid mandatory withholding on the rollover. [1] [3]

The short answer

An eligible 401(k) distribution can move to an IRA, but permission to take the distribution comes first. Ask the plan for a direct rollover to a compatible self-directed IRA before arranging a metal purchase.

Leaving the employer can be a distribution event. While still employed, reaching age 59½ can permit a distribution if the plan allows it. The plan document determines the available options; age alone is not a promise of access. [1]

Can you roll a 401(k) to gold while still employed?

Only if the plan allows an eligible in-service distribution; leaving an employer can create different options. Do not assume that opening a new IRA makes an active 401(k) available. [1]

For a former employer’s plan, request its current distribution package and ask which balances qualify. For a current employer’s plan, ask whether an in-service distribution is permitted for your age and the particular money source. Get the answer from the administrator. Compare the IRS distribution conditions with the plan’s own terms.

How do you roll a 401(k) to gold without avoidable tax penalties?

Confirm an eligible distribution, preserve the intended tax treatment and request a direct rollover with the new custodian’s exact payee instructions. Keep the receiving account number, the plan’s release confirmation and the custodian’s receipt together. [3]

Ask the employer plan to pay the receiving IRA directly. The mandatory withholding for a payment to you does not apply to this direct route. [3]

  1. Get the distribution decision

Confirm the eligible amount and whether the plan requires any additional approvals.

  2. Open the matching IRA

Give the new custodian the old plan’s account type and tax breakdown.

  3. Match the payment details

Use the custodian’s written payee wording on the plan’s direct-rollover instruction.

  4. Trace receipt before ordering

Confirm that the IRA received the funds, then review the separate metal order.

Keep each handoff documented before starting the next one.

A direct-rollover check can be delivered to you if it is payable to the receiving IRA. The payee, rather than the delivery address, determines whether this withholding rule applies. [4] Ask both institutions to confirm the treatment. For a fuller comparison, read direct payment versus payment to you.

How does 20% withholding affect a 401(k) rollover?

A payment to you can create withholding and a redeposit deadline. Avoid treating it as temporary spending money. [3] [3]

A taxable eligible rollover distribution from an employer plan paid to you generally has 20% withheld. To roll over the entire taxable distribution, replace that withheld amount using other money within the rollover deadline. [3]

If the distribution is paid to you, the usual deadline to complete an eligible rollover is 60 days after receipt. A direct payment to the receiving account avoids handling this deadline yourself. [3] See how to count the 60 days and check relief. If a personal distribution has already arrived, contact the receiving custodian and a tax professional promptly. A dealer’s “we handle everything” statement does not replace the rollover deadline.

Where should Roth 401(k) money go?

Designated Roth 401(k) money belongs on a Roth-compatible route. Tell the receiving custodian about the Roth balance before completing its application. [5]

A designated Roth employer-plan account can roll into a Roth IRA, not a traditional IRA. Moving untaxed plan money to a Roth IRA generally brings the untaxed amount into income. [5]

Ask the plan to show any non-Roth after-tax contributions separately as well. Mixed tax sources deserve specific instructions. Use the Roth 401(k) rollover guide for the Roth IRA five-year rule and source-to-destination comparison.

Can you roll a 401(k) into an existing IRA?

An eligible plan distribution may be rolled into an IRA you already have if it accepts the rollover and is the permitted destination for that tax source. Opening a brand-new IRA is not a rollover requirement. [2]

If the IRA you already have is funded and you now want a different custodian, read the gold IRA transfer guide. Keep that IRA-to-IRA instruction distinct from the employer-plan rollover.

Which payments should stay out of a rollover?

Only eligible rollover distributions belong in the rollover instruction. [3]

RMDs, employer-plan hardship payments and certain other distributions cannot be rolled over. Ask the payer to confirm which part of your proposed payment is eligible before it leaves the plan. [3]

When might you keep the 401(k) instead?

Keeping the plan can be better if it already provides the investments, costs and access terms you need. Compare those features before giving up the existing account arrangement.

A taxable IRA withdrawal before age 59½ generally carries an additional 10% tax unless an exception applies. Moving to a gold IRA does not create a new exemption. [6]

Gold can fall in price and pays no income. Dealer pricing, custody and storage add costs; FINRA says self-directed IRA fees are typically higher than directed-IRA fees. A rollover is not right for everyone. [7] Review published charges and missing cost information before choosing a dealer.

What else should you check?

Check the account-specific rule and the conditions in each answer before approving a payment.

Can I roll a 401(k) to a gold IRA without penalty?

An eligible rollover to a compatible traditional IRA can preserve tax deferral; a Roth conversion changes the tax result. Direct payment avoids the mandatory withholding that applies when an eligible taxable plan distribution is paid to you. [3] Confirm eligibility with the plan administrator.

Can you roll over a 401(k) into an existing IRA?

An eligible plan distribution may be rolled into an IRA you already have if it accepts the rollover and is the permitted destination for that tax source. Opening a brand-new IRA is not a rollover requirement. [2] Check the receiving custodian’s accepted assets before approving a physical-metal order.

How long does a 401(k) gold IRA rollover take?

It varies by plan and receiving custodian. Ask who controls each step in the rollover timeline. A dealer’s estimate is not an IRS deadline extension.

Should I roll my 401(k) into a gold IRA?

Compare the current plan’s investments, costs and withdrawal features with the proposed IRA before deciding. Gold can fall in price, pays no income and adds dealer, custody and storage costs. [7] Keeping the plan remains a valid choice.
