The short answer

First identify the account you hold and whether its money is pre-tax or Roth. Then verify distribution eligibility and the payment route. The answers below link to the guide responsible for each question.

How does a gold IRA rollover work?

Eligible retirement money moves to an accepting self-directed IRA before any qualifying metal is purchased. Check the account you would leave and the permitted payment route in the IRS rollover overview. Compare companies only after confirming eligibility, custody and costs.

What else should you check?

Check the account-specific rule and the conditions in each answer before approving a payment.

Can I roll a 401(k) into a gold IRA?

Yes, if the plan permits an eligible distribution and the receiving IRA accepts it. [1] Start with former-employer and current-employer 401(k) checks.

Is moving an existing IRA the same process?

An institution-to-institution IRA move uses a trustee transfer, which avoids withholding and does not use the IRA rollover-frequency allowance. [2] Read the IRA tax-type and transfer guide.

How long do I have if the money is paid to me?

If the distribution is paid to you, the usual deadline to complete an eligible rollover is 60 days after receipt. A direct payment to the receiving account avoids handling this deadline yourself. [1] Use the indirect-rollover clock explanation to check what starts the period.

Will my plan withhold tax?

A taxable eligible rollover distribution from an employer plan paid to you generally has 20% withheld. To roll over the entire taxable distribution, replace that withheld amount using other money within the rollover deadline. [1] See which payment routes avoid that withholding.

Does the one-rollover-per-year rule cover every move?

The usual limit is one IRA-to-IRA 60-day rollover across your IRAs in any 12-month period. Trustee transfers and plan-to-IRA rollovers do not use that allowance. [2] See the IRA 12-month test before receiving an IRA distribution.

Does an annual contribution limit cap my rollover?

An eligible rollover is separate from a new annual IRA contribution. The annual contribution ceiling does not cap an otherwise eligible rollover. [3] The IRA contribution-versus-transfer section explains the paperwork distinction.

Can I keep IRA gold at home?

Qualifying bullion must remain in the physical possession of an eligible trustee. [4] Check the money-to-metal route and have the custodian document its storage arrangement before buying.

How quickly will the whole move finish?

There is no universal processing promise here. Ask each institution about its stage in the rollover timeline. A tax deadline for a personal distribution is a different issue.

Why check a governmental 457(b) before leaving?

Governmental 457(b) distributions generally avoid the 10% early-distribution tax, except for amounts attributable to rollovers from other qualified plans. Once moved into an IRA, later withdrawals follow IRA rules and can face that additional tax before age 59½ unless an exception applies. [6] [7] See the governmental 457(b) access tradeoff.

What should a TSP participant confirm?

TSP money follows TSP-specific rules. Check distribution eligibility, tax sources and payment instructions directly with the TSP.

What is different about a 403(b)?

Ask the plan about distribution eligibility and the provider about contract-release terms. Use the 403(b) plan-and-contract checklist before signing.

Why is Goldco always first in this guide?

Its placement is paid. Goldco pays for qualifying inquiries and purchases; Augusta pays for qualifying inquiries. Read the affiliate payment disclosure and comparison method.

Should I roll my 401(k) into a gold IRA?

There is no universal yes: compare the current plan’s costs, access and investments with the proposed account. Gold can fall in price, pays no income and adds dealer, custody and storage costs. [5] Use the 401(k) stay-put checks.

Does the IRS know if I buy gold?

An IRA rollover must be reported on your tax return even when none of the rollover is taxable. [3] Check the rollover reporting records rather than treating a physical-metal IRA as anonymous.

What are the downsides of a gold IRA?

Gold can fall in price, pays no income and adds dealer, custody and storage costs. [5] Compare the costs of the rollover before leaving an existing account.

Does a Roth 401(k) rollover keep the same five-year clock?

Time in a designated Roth 401(k) does not count toward the Roth IRA five-taxable-year period for qualified distributions. If you contributed to any Roth IRA in an earlier year, that earlier IRA contribution is used to measure the period. [8] Read the Roth 401(k) rollover guide before planning a withdrawal.

What is a direct rollover vs a 60-day rollover?

A direct rollover pays the receiving retirement account; a 60-day rollover is an eligible redeposit after payment to you. [1] [1] Compare direct and indirect rollover instructions.

Is a gold IRA rollover right for everyone?

No: gold can fall in price, pays no income and adds dealer, custody and storage costs. [5] Review when keeping your existing retirement account is better and compare the complete costs before moving.
